Mac Tip #574, 13 March 2013

For really quick access to specific web pages add them as icons to the Home Screen on your iPhone or iPad running iOS 6. Especially if you have a slow connection, it’s the quickest way to get directly to a page you want.

Quick Start

  1. Open a web page in Safari on iOS 6.
  2. Tap the Share button.
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen.
  4. Edit the name if you wish.
  5. Tap the Add button.

I’ve spent a lot of time at the beach recently, where my cell connection is erratic, unreliable and slow at the best of times.

There’s a fantastic web page though which shows weather information for that particular very small area and I like to check that information frequently.

Instead of opening Safari on my iPhone, having some random page I was last viewing try to load, tapping Bookmarks, finding the page I want and then finally loading it I can now get to that weather page in one tap. I tap the special Bookmark on my Home Screen and the correct page starts loading immediately.

If this would be useful for you, here are the steps, showing how to add MacTips to your device’s Home Screen. Add as many Bookmark icons for as many pages as you need.

Note: on the iPad the Share button is at the top of the screen, to the left of the Address Bar. I don’t have an iPod touch, but the instructions should be similar.

The bookmark is saved to your Home Screen. Depending how many apps and icons you already have, it may be added to a page you’re not currently viewing. Scroll through the pages by swiping to the left on the Home Screen.

In future, a single tap on that icon will open Safari and start loading the relevant web page.

How to move the Home Screen icons around

For bonus points, move and arrange your Home Screen icons to suit yourself, as explained in Arrange Application icons on the iPhone or iPod touch.
