How to forward an SMS on an iPhone

Sometimes you need to send an SMS you’ve received on to another person. It’s not immediately obvious how to do this, but it is easy. The trick lies with the Edit button. Here’s what to do.

Quick Start

  1. While viewing a received message tap Edit.
  2. Select messages.
  3. Tap Forward.
  4. Edit the message as required.
  5. Add a recipient address.
  6. Send.

Tap the Edit button on a Message screen

When you’re viewing an SMS you’ve received look at the top of the screen to find the Edit button.

Tap Edit to be able to forward an SMS.

Tap Edit to reveal each message on its own line, with a circle beside it on the left.

Select messages

Tap the circle beside one or more messages. The Delete and Forward buttons at the bottom of the screen become active once one or more messages have been selected.

Tap Forward and enter a recipient address

With one or more messages selected tap the Forward button at the bottom of the screen.

Enter an address and edit the message, if you like.

A new message opens with the text from the received message in it.

Edit the message if you wish and enter a recipient.

When you’re ready, send the message.

Who’d have thought you need Edit to Forward?
